It’s The Little Things That Matter

Have you ever noticed that when you are feeling down or lonely, something as simple as a phone call from a friend or spending some time talking with your neighbour can have a dramatically positive effect on your mood? For many of us, that friend, family member or neighbour is just a quick phone call away, but for our elderly loved ones, it can be much more difficult finding someone to reach out to when we need some comfort or conversation.

Many times, we forget about our elderly loved ones or think that they are just too busy for us to call, but, in reality, they might be sitting home alone thinking the same thing about us. Often times, it’s the little things that matter and, while it might not mean very much to us, it does to them. A cup of coffee, stopping over for tea, or just giving them a call to say hi and see how their day is going can mean the world to them. It can brighten a mood, create some positivity, even turn a bad day into a good one.

What Are Some Things You Can Do To Make A Difference?

Give Them A Call- calling your elderly loved one or video chatting with them is a good way to keep in touch and you can also see how they are doing and if they need any assistance with anything.

Invite Them To Coffee Or Lunch- invite your elderly loved one out to lunch or for a cup of coffee and spend some time chatting about their day or how they are doing. Be sure to tell them about your day as well so it doesn’t seem too one sided. Our loved ones actually do like to hear how we are getting on from time to time!

Visit More Often- unless your loved ones live far away, try to visit them more often. While a phone call is nice, nothing can replace the real thing. You can also see how they are doing and if there is anything that you can do for them such as helping organise their home, or doing any maintenance they might not be able to get around to.

Send Them A Special Gift- a surprise of flowers, sweets or a meaningful gift, can brighten anyone’s day and it can brighten someone’s spirits and help them recover from an illness or injury much sooner.
